The Challenges of being a Solopreneur
Technology that is in a constant state of change can be difficult to learn and just when you have it figured out, it changes again. Add that to spending hours keeping up with bookkeeping, retouching photos, learning customer management software, and figuring out how to solve it all when something goes wrong is time consuming and can result in some late nights.
My job as portrait artist photographer is to establish a personal connection between the viewer and the work of art (portrait) to create imagery that tells a beautiful story. A story so wonderful that when they look up at the portrait they smile and it brings them back to a happy place, time or memory. My job is to connect with the client. I see them smiling back at me while I retouch their faces and I feel the connection with their family and pets. It brings a smile to my face that I have created something truly special for them.
I was recently at the Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan (WESK) networking event which presents opportunities to network with like minded women in business with dreams, aspirations, and desires and to share what they love to do. The speaker that evening was Lisa Peters from Access Talk of the Town. She is also an event planner and works for Access Communications, a mother of two and a real go-getter. Just listening to her was inspirational. She said to get out in the community to relieve the loneliness, to pick up the phone and make that next call or contact and surround yourself with people that care about you, your joy, and your business and go out and make a difference. She had such courage to share where she has been and where she is today at the young age of 50 (I would not have guessed that, she looks amazing). Lisa spoke with confidence in what she does and says she has no regrets in her life choices.
Phone technology is so flexible today and a great way to connect with people, but it seems we only have time for a quick text and by doing so we are less and less giving of our time. We are relying more and more on text messaging, but as a business owner who wants to connect more with my clients should I be changing the way I do business? Should text messaging become the way I change in 2020 when a spokesperson such as Lisa Peters says to connect with people on the phone? My preference is to be giving of my time by speaking on the phone or meeting in person. It allows me to better communicate the benefits of what my business offers and allows for open discussion of what the customer needs and wants. Although there may be times where text and email are important and needed means for communication, the best approach to accomplish what you need with, and for your client, is by talking on the phone and meeting in person.
What are your thoughts? Do you believe businesses should change to solely text message, a combination of both or connecting in a more personal level through a phone call?
